I was delighted when I was asked to fly to Kuala Lumpur to shoot a commercial. I packed my bags and a variety of cameras and set off across the dateline to Malaysia. As I was driven around I kept the cameras rolling, not quite sure what my film would be about.
In a moment of foolishness I mentioned to my kind hosts that I had suddenly realized Malaysia was not a Third World country as I anticipated it might be. They were horrified. When I came home and took my collection of images into the cutting room I realized that, yet again, I had learned a great deal on my trip – some of it trivial, some of it not. What I know now is that I’d do anything to go back.
Travel Tip Malaysia is very humid and it rains a lot – it is the only country I know which has shelters hundreds of feet long on the freeways under which bike riders can shelter in the frequent storms. Take an umbrella and an effective raincoat of some sort.
